In honor of John Hughes my family and I watched Sixteen Candles last night. We actually owned 5 of his movies. I was surprised. Anyway, I decided to pay close attention and try to watch as if I had never seen it before. It worked and I laughed my ass off while also noticing things that I never saw or heard previously. For instance, when Long Duck Dong and his New-Style American girlfriend are crashing into to Jake's driveway, there was a guy laying on the lawn passed out. I also turned on the captioning because believe me, when you don't see the words, you miss a lot! So, towards the end in another Long Duck Dong moment, he answers the door to find Jake standing there. He quickly shuts the door and says he will, "call the F.I.B., I call police!" I never noticed he said F.I.B.
Sixteen Candles is an all time favorite of mine. It's the story of Samantha Baker's sixteenth birthday. She wakes up and discovers she hasn't grown any bod over the summer nor does she look sixteen. She then finds out that her whole family has forgotten her birthday. At school we see her swoon over Jake Ryan, a senior who is "beautiful". And may I say that I agree! He doesn't even know she exists until he picks up a note/quiz she drops that was supposed to go to her best friend. He has a girlfriend who is the most popular girl in school but he is sick and tired of her partying ways. He begins to notice Sam but she has no idea.
We can't forget Farmer Fred, I mean Farmer Ted, better known as "The Geek". He has a huge part in this movie. He's quick with comebacks and cute in a geeky way to boot!
Another prominent character is, of course, Long Duck Dong, exchange student extraordinaire! Not! He has some of the most well-known lines in the movie. Can anyone say, "AUTOMOBILE!!!" ?

John Hughes-You will be missed!
John Hughes' movies were a huge part of my life growing up in the 80's and 90's as I know it was of many of yours. Even my oldest daughter is now a huge fan of his movies. She just saw The Breakfast Club for the first time last week. Here is a tribute I got from Youtube that I like.

Weeds-Suck and Spit-August 3rd, 2009
I can't express to people enough how awesome this show is! Thank goodness there is only violence once in a while. If you are not yet watching this, let me tell you, you are missing out! It is so weird and funny and always keeps you guessing. A little background; Nancy Botwin is a widowed mother of 2 boys. When her husband died he left her with no money. So she started selling pot to pay the bills. This show is a dramedy and one of the best shows Showtime has ever had.
Ok in this episode we start out with Nancy unable to sleep because she is on the couch in the living room where her ex-bro in law/ non-biological brand new baby daddy, Andy, has his loud pacman game, etc all over the place. So she heads upstairs to sleep in his bed, which used to be her bed, where it's quiet. They argue and she tells him if he wants to be a daddy, he's gonna have to get up with the baby. I LOVE their chemistry and I truly hope that when this show is all said and done, Nancy and Andy end up together raising the older boys and the Jewish half Mexican baby named Stevie. Stevie Ray that is. Later in the episode we see them at a restaurant having a drink and it's her first since getting pregnant. Her boobs begin hurting because she forgot to pump before going out. So she proceeds to go into the ladies room to pump and what do you know, the battery runs out. So she calls Andy from her cellphone and asks him to come to the restroom. She begs him to suck out the milk and we see her breast. He sucks AND swallows it instead of spitting it out! She's pissed!
In the meantime, Doug (former friend and former mayor) and Silas (Nancy's oldest son) are told by Dean (another former friends husband) that all their pot is gone. Silas punches him. But Celia Hodes, who his Dean's ex, has the pot and is disguising it in her 'I'm Pretty' makeup line and making a killing in profits. She moves out of Nancy's home and into her own condo. Doug is curious as to how she got rich so quickly. She tells him she been selling a butload of make-up. He proceeds to get some himself to hopefully make a quick profit. Little does he know that his isn't quite the same thing.
At the end Nancy and Andy are sleeping in the same bed but only sharing it, and in walks Esteban, her Mexican drug lord ex lover/ex fiance/biological baby daddy to the Jewish Mexican baby named Stevie. He tells her he loves her and wants to marry her. She's pissed! They go outside and argue. Andy pretends not to care but as we previously learned, he's in love with Nancy. He sneaks downstairs and tells Shane (Nancy's middle son) to go outside and listen although he really doesn't care (not)!. We see a man sneak up and shoot at them. He misses Nancy and Esteban. Cesar, the bodyguard of Esteban, shoots the shooter dead we can assume. The we hear Shane say, "Mom". He's been shot in the arm.
This episode was great just like all the rest. I love Andy Botwin and he has to be my favorite character on the show. He's sexy but stupid and totally lovable.
Next weeks shows Esteban and Nancy getting married but it looks like a dream sequence so we'll see.
